This article will discuss some important reactions between HI and FeCl3, like redox reaction, reversible reaction, product formed etc.

What is the product of HI and FeCl3?

Ferrous chloride(FeCl2), hydrochloric acid(HCl) and Iodine(I2) are formed when ferric chloride(FeCl3) reacts with iodane(HI).

FeCl3 + HI —> HCl+ FeCl2 + I2.

What type of reaction are HI and FeCl3?

The reaction between HI and FeCl3 is an oxidation-reduction reaction.

The reaction between HI and FeCl3 is balanced, as shown below:

  • The general equation is FeCl3 + HI —>HCl + FeCl2+ I2
  • The number of moles in the reactants and products side is shown in the table below.
Table representing the number of moles of reactants and products
  • The number of moles of I is to be multiplied by 2 on the reactant side to balance it.
  • Also, the number of moles of H has to be multiplied by 2 on the product side.
  • The number of moles of Cl is unbalanced, so to balance it, multiply it by 3 on the product side and by 2 on the reactant side.
  • Hence, the number of moles of Fe is also balanced.
  • The balanced equation is,2 FeCl3 + 2HI —>2HCl + 2FeCl2 + I2.

HI + FeCl3 net ionic equation.

  • The ionic equation is 2Fe3+(aq) +2I- (aq) —> 2Fe2+ (aq) + 2I(g).
  • The state of elements in the ionic equation of the HI + fecl3 reaction is as follows
  • 2 HI (aq) +2 FeCl3 (aq) —>2 FeCl2 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) +I2(g).
  • The ionic equation of each element is as follows:2H+(aq)+ 2I-(aq)+2Fe3+(aq)+6Cl-(aq) —> 2Fe2+(aq) + 4Cl- (aq) + 2H+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq)+ 2I(g).
  • The same ions from either side gets canceled. Therefore,2Fe3+(aq) +2I- (aq) —> 2Fe2+ (aq) + 2I(g).

Is HI + FeCl3 a conjugate pair?

HI + FeCl3 do not have conjugate pair because they do not have a difference in their proton number to form a conjugate pair.

HI + FeCl3 intermolecular forces

  • The intermolecular forces exhibited by HI are London – dispersion force and dipole-dipole force.
  • The intermolecular force in the FeCl3 molecule is electrostatic attraction.
  • Dipole-dipole interaction is observed in HCl.

HI + FeCl3 reaction enthalpy

The reaction enthalpy of HI + FeCl3 is 1.31 KJ/mol. The standard enthalpy of the formation of reactants and products is shown below:

MoleculesReaction enthalpy(KJ/mol)
Table showing the standard enthalpy of formation of molecules.

The reaction enthalpy is calculated as follows:

  • Reaction enthalpy = (standard enthalpy of products)- (standard enthalpy of reactants)

Is HI+ FeCl3 a buffer solution?

HI+ FeCl3 is not a buffer solution as HI is a strong acid, and it does not form a weak acid instead form another strong acid HCl, as a product.

Is HI+ FeCl3 a complete reaction?

HI + FeCl3 is a complete reaction because no more reaction occurs after the products are formed.

Is HI+ FeCl3 an exothermic or endothermic reaction?

Is HI+ FeCl3 a Redox reaction?

HI + FeCl3 is a redox reaction due to the following reason:

  • 2I- – 2e- —> 2I ; is the Oxidation reaction and;
  • 2Fe 3+ +2 e- —> 2Fe; is the reduction reaction.
  • HI is a reducing agent in this reaction, and FeCl3 is an oxidizing agent.

Is HI+ FeCl3 a reversible reaction?

HI+ FeCl3 is not a reversible reaction as the product cannot be changed to reactants by any method.

Is HI+ FeCl3 a displacement reaction?

HI+ FeCl3 is a single displacement reaction in which the cl atom gets displaced from FeCl3 to form HCl.

HI ionizes completely in water and is used in the cativa process. FeCl3 is used for catalyzing many reactions, like the preparation of aromatic compounds. It is also used as a leaching agent in Metallurgy and sewage water treatment. HCl is an important laboratory reagent.
